The Big Match

I was challenged to a quick impromptu golf match yesterday by a friend of mine. We played for enough to make it exciting but not so much that it would strain a friendship. This competitive golf environment was fun and one that I have not been a part of as much as I’d like. People respond to competitive rounds differently. It helps some play their best while others find themselves struggling.

Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course… the space between your ears.

Competitive Styles

Observing both of us during yesterday’s match it was easy to see our two styles when it comes to competition. My friend had a tendency to get fired up much as you would see from your traditional athlete. I, on the other hand, had a more laid back attitude just trying to hit the best shot I could with little regards to the outcome.

Be yourself

There is no right or wrong way to approach a competition, kind of. The one caveat I have found is the attitude you bring needs to reflect your personality. If you are a fiery competitor, you will most likely find success letting that side of you show and same is true if you are laid back you might want to try that approach to competitions.

Help Yourself

If you find yourself playing competitive rounds and not always seeing positive results, try changing your style. The style that fits your game is not always clear, a little trial and error can help. Allow yourself to get fired up for a few holes and if that doesn’t work, relax and take it a shot at a time. If you still find yourself struggling maybe it’s time to reflect and start considering your expectations.
