How to pick the right instructor

I am the best golf instructor in Wisconsin; to some. That could be the response of every golf instructor in Wisconsin, and every one of them would be right. If you are looking for a golf instructor, it is probably not in your best interest just to search for “the best instructor” you should do a bit of self-reflection and a bit of tire-kicking. I know what you’re thinking, “oh geez here he goes again,” it sounds more complicated than you think.

The extent of self-reflection will be based on your learning habits, goals, and ability. This information will be relevant when it comes to asking questions. Every golf instructor welcomes questions, it shows your curious and yearning to learn. The more knowledge you have of yourself, the easier it will be to see if the relationship is working and at the end of the day that is the most important part, well, second.

Tire-kicking is the next phase of finding the right instructor, you can think of it as dating. Taking a couple lessons with one instructor is an excellent way to see if it is a good fit. How is the communication between the two of you? Do you feel like you’re learning? Is it easy to ask the questions and even more important, how are the answers? If it’s not working it’s not working, and you have to be prepared to walk away. Seldomly do we find our soul-mate on the first try, “It’s not you it’s me” might ring a bell.

If I were to rank importance factors of a golf instructor these would be the three, in order:

  1. Geographical Location
  2. Personal Connection & Communication
  3. Instructors Knowledge of the Game
