Mike Quinlan | Simple Golf Swing Instruction

Mike Quinlan providing simple golf swing instruction to junior golfers

From Player to Coach | Mike’s Journey

I founded Mike Quinlan Golf with one mission: to move golfers from confusion to clarity through simple golf swing instruction. After years of competing and studying the game’s greatest teachers, I realized that lasting improvement isn’t found in quick mechanical fixes, but in a complete, holistic understanding of the swing and the mind. That realization led to the development of ‘The Approach’. My philosophy, “The Approach,” offers simple golf swing instruction focused on mastering the motion. This method is designed and has proven to deliver guaranteed golf improvement by eliminating confusion and focusing on athletic instinct.

As a coach based right here in Sussex, WI, I am dedicated to raising the level of golf performance in our community. I believe every student, regardless of skill level, deserves access to world-class, personalized instruction.

My commitment to providing the highest quality instruction requires continuous study of biomechanics, motor learning, and the historical principles of the game. This dedication ensures that the methods I teach are always grounded in proven science and time-tested philosophy, giving you access to truly cutting-edge and effective simple golf swing instruction.

The Mike Quinlan “Approach” | Mastering the Motion

My philosophy, “The Approach,” is built on the belief that true, lasting improvement in golf comes not from chasing mechanical perfection, but from understanding and mastering the motion of the swing. My coaching integrates modern, data-driven analysis with timeless, foundational concepts championed by masters like Ernest Jones and Manuel de la Torre, ensuring that every student learns to own their game.

The Principles of the Approach

1. The Swing is the Motion, Not the Mechanics

Following the legacy of Ernest Jones, who famously defined the swing as “the thing,” my instruction focuses on the feeling and rhythm of the motion itself. We work on the cause, not the effect. Instead of dictating a rigid position for every joint, we teach the student to execute a simple, athletic, and repeatable motion. When the feeling is right, the positions will naturally follow.

2. The Club Head is Paramount (Manuel de la Torre)

A core tenet of my coaching is the influence of Manuel de la Torre, who emphasized the movement of the club head above all else. The objective is to control and deliver the club head effectively to the ball, rather than focusing internally on the body’s complicated movements. By directing the student’s attention to the intended result—the motion of the club head—we simplify the learning process and unlock the student’s inherent coordination and athleticism.

3. Holistic Integration: Beyond the Range

The swing is just one piece of the puzzle. My coaching is always holistic, integrating the three major components of high-level performance:

  • Mental Fortitude: Building confidence, focus, and a pre-shot routine that stands up under pressure on the course.
  • Course Strategy: Mastering decision-making, proper aim, and smart shot selection to lower scores immediately.
  • Physical Capabilities: Ensuring the swing we build works with the student’s physical strengths and limitations, not against them.

4. Customization and the “Why”

I reject the notion of a single “perfect swing.” My methodology is highly personalized and data-driven. We use video and launch monitor data to diagnose exactly why a particular movement is occurring, and then we build a prescriptive plan that fits the student’s body, schedule, and goals.

The Mike Quinlan Approach is designed to move students from guessing to achieving by providing clear, strategic instruction that elevates performance on the driving range and, most importantly, on the scorecard.
